A Message From Captain John I feel very blessed to be able to offer guided fishing trips on the big, bad and beautiful Lakes Mead and Mohave. Lake Mead has evolved into one of the best lakes in the country for numbers. Liberal limits of 20 stripers per person are a distinct possibility most of the year on this fabulous year-round fishery. When first planted, stripers were not supposed to be able to spawn but adapted so well to Lake Mead that they quickly rose to the top of the food chain and number in the millions. Most of our catches run in size from 1 to 6 pounds but we utilize light tackle for sport and you will find these fish “great fun” to catch no matter what your angling experience might be. Whether you are chasing boils for the summertime top-water tango, smoking a jig as fast as you can with hits that’ll stretch your arms, pulling one up from 150 feet with 6 pound test, feeling that hard tap while drifting live bait, or watching the water erupt in spray as a big cow busts your foot-long lure, you will know why stripers are so popular anywhere they swim. Larger fish are definitely present but not in the volume of the golden oldie days of the late 70’s and early 80’s. During this time it was not uncommon to throw ten pounders back while looking for bragging size lunkers. The Lake Mead record is 58 pounds set by Carson Romans in the ‘80’s. Trophy size stripers magically appear near the end of November when the water cools to near 65 degrees. Prime time in December, January, and February coincides with windy weather and weekly trout plants. These trout plants draw the big ones up shallow and the best days to work these hot fish are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Many experts believe Lake Mohave still has the world record inland sized striper of over 70 pounds there for the taking. Cool water, good sized forage, and structure that boggles the mind keep these leviathans fat and happy. Gin-clear Mohave stretches over 60 miles from Hoover to Davis dams. Jagged rock structure and submerged mesquite trees enable monster stripers to rock you or brush you in a heartbeat. Summer striper runs center around Willow Beach, Arizona and winter near Cottonwood Cove, Nevada. These areas are approximately 50 miles from Las Vegas and to fish there takes some careful preparation and a hardcore trophy hunter mindset. Those interested in this kind of piscatorial pursuit may feel free to call or e-mail me anytime for detailed information. Thank you for your interest, John F. Moehlenbrock |
